הסרט מגולל את סיפורה (הדמיוני) של משפחת קורליאונה (Corleone), שהיא אחת מהמשפחות השולטות על המאפיה הסיצליאנית בניו יורק לקראת אמצע המאה ה-20.הסרט מתאר את התהליך שבו הגיבור הטוב הופך להיות הגיבור הרע. מייקל הוא גיבור מלחמה אמריקאי, שבוחר בעקבות הנסיבות לפעול על פי הקוד המשפחתי, ולא להתנתק מן הפשע.
