ג'ון סמית' (אלכס פטיפייר) הוא צעיר בלתי רגיל - פליט הנמצא במנוסה מאויבים אכזריים שנשלחו לחסלו. כשהוא משנה את זהותו, נודד מעיירה לעיירה עם השומר שלו, הנרי (טימותי אוליפנט), ג'ון הוא תמיד הנער החדש בבית הספר. בעיירה קטנה באוהיו בה הוא קובע את ביתו הנוכחי, ג'ון עובר אירועים אשר משנים את חייו - הוא פוגש את אהבתו הראשונה (דיאנה אגרון), מגלה בעצמו כוחות על טבעיים ויוצר קשר עם האחרים אשר חולקים את גורלו.
